Pavel Koutecky Awards, June 8

15.5.2009

The third annual Pavel Koutecky Awards will be announced at Archa Theatre. At the gala evening on June 8, excerpts from the new TV series Citizen Havel will be seen for the first time. More than 70 documentary films have been entered in the contest.

The jury this year includes the director of Archa Theatre Ondřej Hrab, Michaela Klečková of the One World Festival, the researcher for Citizen Havel Libor Tůma, textile designer and Koutecky’s long-time girlfriend Alena Čechová and director Petr Zelenka. “When I won a Czech Lion award this year for the documentary Citizen Havel, behind the scenes I met Mr. Zelenka, who had also won a Czech Lion for The Brothers Karamazov. I didn’t hesitate to approach him and he immediately agreed to be part of the jury,” said Jarmila Poláková, the producer of Citizen Havel and one of the founders of the Pavel Koutecky Awards.

“I did not know Pavel Koutecky personally, but I admire his work, and I am proud to be part of the jury of the awards which were created in his honour,” said director Petr Zelenka.  “It’s also a good reason for me to see many Czech documentaries, which are often better than feature films,” added Zelenka, whose favourite documentary filmmakers include Míra Janek, Helena Třeštíková and Michael Moore.

The winning film will be announced at the gala evening on June 8 at Archa Theatre. “In addition to the winning film, audiences can each year see one of the films of Pavel Koutecky. This year it will be an exclusive part from the soon to be released television series Citizen Havel,” said Jarmila Poláková. The four-part series will be broadcast this fall on Nova. It will not simply be a TV version of the feature-length documentary shown in four parts: in the series the creators have emphasized events from the first years of the Czech state. The series will feature hitherto unseen footage.
