27.2.2009

Nominations for Radok Awards: Havel goes up against Cimrman
24.2.2009,  tyden.cz

The Czech play of the year 2008 will be either Havel’s Leaving or Czech Heaven by the trio of Cimrman-Smoljak-Svěrák. The results of the voting of 66 critics for the Alfréd Radok Awards will be announced on March 14. The organizers today published the nominees.

Leaving by Václav Havel has been nominated for several awards. It is one of the contenders in the Czech play of the year category and the performance at Archa Theatre directed by David Radok aspires to win in the prestigious staging and sets categories. Also up for awards are the lead actors in Radok’s staging: Jan Tříska in the role of the departing statesman Rieger and Zuzana Stivínová as his wife Irena. Originally slated to play the part of Rieger’s wife was Dagmar Havlová, who however pulled out of the production during rehearsals. But she did not come away from the Radok Award nominations empty handed: she will go up against Stivínova thanks to her portrayal of Raněvska in the staging of The Cherry Orchard at the Vinohrady Theatre.

The Alfréd Radok Awards are held annually by the Endowment for the Alfréd Radok Awards in collaboration with the Aura – Pont agency and the magazine Svět a Divadlo (The World and Theatre). The first Alfréd Radok Award for play of the year was given in 1992.
