MOGWAI (SCOTLAND), Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet/ Steve Reid (UK/USA) - Nov. 15 / 20:00
Mogwai, one of the world’s most important exemplars of post-rock, will play for the first time in Prague on Saturday, November 15. The band will appear at Archa Theatre in connection with the release of their new album The Hawk is Howling. The concert will also be the scene for a unique collaboration with other great musicians. Kieran Hebden (better known as Four Tet) and drummer Steve Reid will present non-traditional electronica with post-rock roots.
The five-member Scottish band’s status as the most influential band of its kind is primarily due to their unique ability to combine musical riffs, complex rhythms, guitars and ethereal ambient chill into bewitching, emotional compositions. The band around guitarist Stuart Braithwait, which was formed in 1995, is particularly reputed as an excellent concert band. In addition to their inventive work with sound, when heard live the instruments amaze mainly with the power of the layered guitars, which know no limits.
The mastery of their mostly instrumental work (we sometimes hear atmospheric sampled vocals) consists mainly in the artistically inventive surface of a single motif that expands into many intriguing details. The band, which creatively borrows from styles such as art-rock, shoegaze or metal, is also celebrated for its humorous song titles, which ironically comment on the possibilities of conveying popular music with lyrics. The music of Mogwai, whose name means “spirit” in Cantonese, has a truly spiritual dimension. It is intelligent and free, but also doesn’t take itself too seriously, simply going where it wants. Mogwai is one of the world’s most outstanding guitar post-rock bands.
Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet/Steve Reid (UK/USA)
Rarely is there such a fruitful and amazing collaboration of two extraordinary individuals. Kieran Hebden, better known as Four Tet, has already been a leading figure on the electronic music scene for a decade at the age of 28 and is one of the most sought-after remixers of his time. The British musician and composer emerged from the post-rock environment (in 1997 he formed a successful and still active band called Fridge) and five years ago opened for Radiohead on their European tour, is celebrated for its fantastic build up of electro-acoustic compositions, which with its sophisticated organic sound gave rise to a subgenre known as “folktronika”. More recently, Hebden has been concentrating on fusing hip-hop and abstract electronic beats with non-traditional jazz samples. In his current album, Ringer, he also experiments with techno rhythms. Hebden and renowned American drummer Steve Reid have been performing an original form of free improvisation together for three years, garnering extraordinary attention from the public and critics. Reid, one of the most original drummers of all time, who has collaborated with such giants as Miles Davis, James Brown, Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman, in a recent interview named Hebden as his key musical and spiritual kindred spirit. Their first performance in the Czech Republic promises to be one of this autumn’s top musical events.
