CLUSTER (Germany), Jazkamer (Norway) - Nov. 4 / 20:00

31.10.2008

In the 1970s, the German duo Cluster pioneered the use of synthesizers and electronica and later inspired Brian Eno in his work with David Bowie. Now, after a long revival, they will play for the first time in Prague. They will be joined by the Norwegian duo Jazkamer, the flagship of the contemporary wave of noise music. Part of the STIMUL festival.

Cluster (Germany)

In Germany in the 1970s, krautrock was at the forefront of a wave of upheaval in experimental rock music. Its leading exponents in rock music were Can, Faust and Neu!. Electronic sounds were created most notably by the trio of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and Cluster, which consists of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius.

Cluster has always avoided the cheap effects that electronic music can offer and focussed on producing concentrated and unpretentious albums that are both colourful and worthy of serious listening. The band’s best album is considered II. The album was made together with the most important pioneer in ambient music, Brian Eno, who called Cluster the most interesting example of the krautrock genre and was hugely inspired by it when producing David Bowie’s “Berlin” albums. The instrumental second part of Bowie’s album Low is clearly indebted to krautrock.

Moebius and Roedelius have gone their separate ways several times. The last time they reunited was last year. Their concerts attract huge audiences, largely because krautrock is currently coming back into fashion. They are also recording their first studio album since 1997 and are performing in Prague for the first time.

Jazkamer (Norway)

Jazkamer consists of Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre. Noise in their view is not a dark invocation of negative power, but an exhilarating loosening of the reins of sound. The improvised bursts of energy, which the duo release into the world both together and in numerous solo projects and collaborations fills dozens of albums. They have collaborated with artists in such diverse genres as the synchronous sounds of Maja Ratkje, the psychedelic improvisers Smegma and the experimental metal band Sunn O))).

Jazkamer, whose name ten years ago included an extra z and m, produce sounds on the most varied electronic boxes and electric guitars. They perform in concerts all over the world, love Japanese extreme sounds, and at a whim either subject their listeners to the most devastating sonic weapons or take them on a ride across the calm waters of gently effervescent frequencies. Of course, no one knows what they will do… so let’s be surprised at their first Prague concert.
