June 2019

One of the most vibrant groups of the independent music scene, America's Animal Collective are coming to play in the Czech Republic for the first time. The foursome, known for their experiments in pop and (freak) folk, will be supported by the Norwegian duo Alog.

10/14/2008 20:00 - Organised by the STIMUL festival, in cooperation with SPERM festival.

Animal Collective take inspiration for their multi-faceted songs from sources as varied as 1960’s psychedelica, traditional folk ballads and contemporary sampled electronica. Descriptions of their sound range from avant-garde pop to new wave folk, and cite names such as Coco Rosie, Joanna Newsom and Iron and Wine. In spite of their unorthodox approach to creation – the group is famous for first playing new songs live, eventually recording them and then putting them ‘on ice’, which has been known to frustrate fans expecting to hear well known hits at Animal Collective concerts – the group has always been highly rated by fans and critics.

The members of the group, appearing under the pseudonyms Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deakin, met in the early 1990’s in Baltimore in Maryland, although we had to wait until 2000 for their first recording. Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, however, soon kicked off a breathtaking proliferation of their discography: in the 7 years that followed, they released 7 albums, as well as singles, EPs and solo projects.

It was the album Sung Tongs, from 2004 which brought them international success. In the absence of the other members of the group, the album was created by just Avey and Panda and presents Animal Collective in a simple neo-folk garb. Critics see last years Strawberry Jam and this years accompaniment EP Water Curses, however,  as a fundamental step in building a unique, rich and electronically seasoned sound. Which of their guises will they choose for their first concert in Prague? Find out on the 14th of October at Archa!

Animal Collective will be supported by the Norwegian experimental electronica duo Alog. Dag-Are Haugan and Espen Sommer Eide are signed to the prestigious record label Rune Gramaphon and their improvisational,  enlighteningly abstract music is created using hand made and operated multifunctional instruments.

This concert sees Sperm Festival and Stimul Festival joining forces for the first time. Over recent years both festivals have built their reputation on presenting Czech audiences with the latest alternative and experimental music from abroad.

Concert. No language barrier.
