Berlin (Belgium) - Bonanza - Oct. 8 & 9 / 19:30

30.9.2008

A documentary theatre-film portrait of the inhabitants of a ruined mining town in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. In English. Part of the 4 + 4 Days in Motion international theatre festival.

Founded in 1881, the town experienced famous gold and silver rushes. The last mine was closed in the 1970s and today 22 residents are registered at the local office, among the smallest in the world. In fact, only seven people permanently reside in Bonanza. Even the town’s mayor doesn’t live here all year round. The relations of the people living in this isolated place are full of hatred and rivalry. Some disputes originated decades ago. Interviews with inhabitants, shots from their daily life, change of light during the day, dawns and sunsets – viewers see all this on five film screens, their editing is accommodated to the possibilities of synchronized perception of an image. The show was one of the highlights of the main programme at the 2007 IETM Festival in Ghent.

The Berlin group of multimedia artists consists of directors Bart Baele, Yves Degryse and actress Caroline Rochlitz. The name comes from one of their favourite places. Cities and places are the theme of their common productions. They combine sociological and historical research with the procedures of a documentary and an artistic vision. The results are impressive portraits of cities and villages which reveal beauties and traumas of landscapes and their inhabitants. The Bonanza project connects with an artistic probe in divided Jerusalem, the rough Canadian town of Iqaluit and looks forward to reflecting on Moscow.

In English with Czech subtitles.
