ALL STAR REFUGEE BAND creates a new version of the Czech national anthem for Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek!

26.9.2008

Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek’s call for a new Czech national anthem was answered by the All Star Refugee Band, which performed at Dance Through the Fence at Archa Theatre.

The anthem fulfils all of the prime minister’s requirements for a new kind of anthem. It combines national traditions with modern elements and also reflects predicted demographic development in the Czech Republic. The studies show that by 2020 7.5% of the country’s population will be made up of immigrants or their children. By mid-century, this number could be as much as a quarter of the population of the Czech Republic.

This trend is also reflected in the new musical arrangement: traditional Czech brass band is accompanied by an accordion and oud. The band plays the song using a reggae beat and the lyrics of “Where Is My Home” are sung by a Swiss, a Chinese and a Kurd. You can hear the new version of the national anthem at http://www.myspace.com/allstarrefjudziband.

All Star Refugee Band was created as part of Archa’s Dance Through the Fence, in which refugees and foreigners living in the Czech Republic perform alongside professional musicians. The director of the show, Jana Svobodová, invited American musician Michael Romanyshyn to create a band for the show and arrange music which would reflect a diversity of musical cultures. Dance Through the Fence premiered in March 2008 at Archa Theatre. Soon after the premiere All Star Refugee Band was invited to perform on its own. Today this multicultural band has already performed a series of successful concerts at music festivals and its repertoire continues to grow.

Gugar Manukjan (accordion), Abdulrahman Kasem (oud, vocals), Jan Středa (trumpet), Adam Koller / David Bartošek (drums), Michael Romanyshyn (clarinet), Jindřich Krippner (clarinet, saxophone), Eva Hromníková (accordion), Petra Lustigová (trombone), Krtek (tuba), Jana Svobodová (saxophone), Philipp Schenker (clarinet, vocals), Jing Lu (violin, vocals)
