Dear Friends of the Archa Theatre
Archa Theatre has never before been in such uncertainty as it is now. In September, the City of Prague suspended all grant activities to cultural institutions. Because of this, thus through no fault of its own, Archa Theatre finds itself in a very critical situation. Two months before the end of the year, we still don’t know how our theatre will be financed in the year 2008.
Archa Theatre has never before been in such uncertainty as it is now. This summer, the cultural policy of the city of Prague came under fire from for-profit theatres, who were demanding the same access to public money as non-profit-making institutions. Consequently, the City of Prague has suspended all grant activities to cultural institutions until a new grant policy is developed.
Because of this, thus through no fault of its own, Archa Theatre finds itself in a very critical situation. Two months before the end of the year, we still don’t know how our theatre will be financed in the year 2008. The four year grant, which we depend on for our existence, expires on the 31st of December. This grant forms the foundation of our financing, on whose basis we are able to generate the other half of the funding that we need.
The City of Prague has announced a deadline of the 7th of December for applications for new grants. The assessment of applications will certainly last several months and it is clear at this point that, even if we succeed in obtaining a new grant, we will only receive the funding at the end of the first quarter of 2008, at the earliest. This would mean that in the first quarter of next year we would not be able to fulfill our legal and financial obligations and, most of all, our obligations to you, our audience.
Because our first priority is you, our audience, and the performances that we want to present to you, we have decided to prepare a new season of the quality that you have come to expect from us.
The programme of Archa Theatre in the next few years also contains projects for which we have obtained international grants. These grants, however, are of course dependant on us also being able to contribute from our own sources. Will we have any and when? This question is hanging over us like the sword of Damocles.
Finding a solution to this critical financial situation is very complicated. We will therefore need your support in the negotiations, which will be important for the future of our theatre. We firmly believe that the existence of a theatre like Archa makes sense for Prague. We would like to know your opinion. In this time of crises, it is important for us.
