ARCHA.MAG 7

1.11.2007

In mid-November Archa Theatre will be transformed into an Amsterdam literary café. The festival Café Amsterdam will present a string of contemporary Dutch authors, who will appear alongside Czech authors. The festival will open on the 16th of November with the literary show EKG – On Love and Amsterdam. Igor Malijesvský and Jaroslav Rudiš talk to Archa.mag about literature and love.

What do you associate with Amsterdam?
Malijevský: The Member of Parliament Mr. Severa.  A visit to this city would probably change his life.
Rudiš:  The feeling of a strong, fresh sea wind, which we don’t have here. And divers from the east. Apparently in Amsterdam they say that Czechs don’t know how smoke their strong grass, because they are used to the weak Czech stuff, which you have to keep in your lungs for about half a year for anything to happen. And when they’re in Amsterdam they inhale for so long, they end up under the table.

What in contemporary Dutch literature appeals to you?
Malijevský: What fascinates me about Dutch literature is that we know almost nothing about it. In November, though, this is going to change.
Rudiš: The upcoming EKG will certainly be very exciting. Among other things, we are planning Czech-Dutch interaction, a dating agency and many other Prague-Amsterdam treats.

What will your literary peepshow on Friday the 16th of November reveal?
Malijevský: A great secret.
Rudiš: It will be an excursion into the Dutch literary overground and underground. Of course it will also touch on love, as always, because our EKG is above all an affair of the heart. And love today is also a peepshow.
